Alex E. Paull Jr.

August 6, 1941 — May 22, 2023

CARBONDALE

Alex  Edward Paull Jr. was born on August 6, 1941 in Hackensack, New Jersey. He was the eldest of six siblings of Alex Paull Sr and Anna May Paull. He passed away at his residence in Carbondale, IL on the evening of May 22, 2023.

He is survived by his wife, Janice Paull; eldest son Sandor (Amanda) Paull, Sandor’s mother, Cathie Paull, Adam Paull & Ara Aiba, Sarah Paull & Ian McCall, and Rachael Paull, his two grandchildren, Faith Paull and Jonathan Paull;  three sisters, Mary Ricco, Kathy (Richard) Krueger, and Judith Paull, and multiple nephews and nieces. He is preceded in death by both parents, and two brothers, Robert (Bob) Paull and Jack Paull.

Alex made deep connections with many of his friends, considering many of them family as well. He is survived by numerous extended family members in Jamaica, South Dakota, and Southern Illinois.

He loved to talk with people, friends and strangers alike. Raised in Hackensack, Alex traveled and lived in many places throughout his life including San Francisco, Oglala, SD Jamaica, Japan, and Mississippi, but his home base was in Boskeydell, IL on Little Indian Creek Farm. Alex was a giving, caring person, always willing to help someone in need. He enjoyed gardening and sharing food with his community was one of his favorite things.

Alex was passionate about many causes, most of them focused on people. He was active in demonstrations and organizations including the American Indian Movement, Anti Nuclear demonstrations, the Pro Peace Movement as a member of the Peace Coalition, anti-logging in the Shawnee, and any cause or movement that caught his heart. Alex also shared his passion for reggae as Bongo Ali on both KILI Radio in South Dakota and WDBX in Carbondale. Raised in the Catholic faith, he quickly picked up many other religions that fit him more including Rastafarianism and Lakota practices. Alex was a writer and an oral storyteller, mostly focusing on memoirs from his life and experiences. His self- published book “I And I Are the Book” has a mix of such stories.

The family will hold a wake on Sunday, June 4, 2023 at 12 noon to 5 pm at the garden next to WDBX, 224 N. Washington Street Carbondale, Illinois. We ask that his friends bring their favorite snacks and stories to share with each other.

A Celebration of Alex’s life will be held in October 2023 at Little Indian Creek Farm.

Memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois at www.hospice.org or WDBX at wdbx.org.
