It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Angela Kay (Verbal) Thomas, age 48, of Murphysboro, IL on Friday, May 30, 2025. A beloved daughter, wife, mother, Gigi, sister, aunt, and friend, Angela fought a courageous 13-year battle with cancer, embodying strength and grace throughout.
Angela was born on July 25, 1976, to Richard and Barbara (Baker) Verbal in Murphysboro, IL. She married Johnny Thomas, formerly of Mt. Vernon, IL, on April 24, 2021.
Angela graduated from Murphysboro High School in 1994 and later continued her education at John A. Logan College. She dedicated much of her professional life to secretarial work, most notably at Curwood Inc., formerly of Murphysboro. She concluded her career in Dietary Services at SIH.
Angela cherished spending time with her family — whether at BBQs, game nights, birthdays, or holiday gatherings. She loved fishing and watching football, especially cheering on her favorite team, the Dallas Cowboys, with her husband. Angie also enjoyed dancing with friends, attending concerts, and above all, being a devoted mom to her two boys and a proud Gigi to her two grandsons.
Angela will be remembered for her unwavering courage, strength, and patience during her long illness. She faced each day with a quiet resilience and an “it is what it is” attitude, never one to complain.
She is survived by her husband, Johnny Thomas of Murphysboro; her sons, Tyler Verbal of Eldorado and Logan Keown of Murphysboro; her grandsons, Kingston Thomas and Kashton Verbal of Murphysboro; her parents, Richard and Barbara (Baker) Verbal of Murphysboro; her siblings, Karri Verbal and Amanda (Dekota) Strodick of Murphysboro, and Luke (Sarah) Verbal of DuQuoin; her nieces and nephews, Tessa Verbal and Ryder Strodick of Murphysboro, Hailey (Hunter) Farmer of Tamaroa, and Kayson Strodick of Murphysboro; her great-niece and great-nephews, Payton and Klayton Farmer of Tamaroa, and Xavior Haney of Murphysboro. She is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends.
Angela was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Samuel and Barbara (McClain) Baker; paternal grandparents, Gene and Ruth (Vaught) Verbal; and her twin babies who were never able to join us on this side of heaven.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Residential Hospice or to the family, in care of her son and grandsons.
Angela's memory will live on in all who loved her, and she will be dearly missed.
