Brenda Kay Wells

Brenda Kay Wells departed this earthly life on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, at Memorial Hospital. Brenda, as she was affectionately known, was born on June 13, 1956, at the former Holden Hospital in Carbondale, Illinois. She was the youngest of six children born to the late William and Alberta (Nesbitt) Blythe.

Brenda graduated from Carbondale Community High School with the Class of 1974 and later attended Southern Illinois University. She dedicated more than 20 years of service to the Center for Archaeological Investigations at Southern Illinois University before retiring.

At an early age, Brenda accepted Christ as her Savior and was baptized at New Zion Missionary Baptist Church by the late Rev. W. H. Clark. A faithful and devoted member, she served with the Missionary Society, sang in the Chapel Choir, and played the piano for the Baptist Training Union. She found great joy in studying God's Word and sharing conversations about His grace and faithfulness.

Brenda was a quiet, gentle soul whose kindness spoke louder than words. She enjoyed watching NBA basketball and football, playing tennis, and spending time watching classic movies. Music was also close to her heart. She especially loved singing hymns such as In the Garden, Near the Cross, I Surrender All, and many others. She often reflected on the meaning of the lyrics, sharing how their messages strengthened and inspired her faith.

The Blythe children were raised with the belief that serving others was both a privilege and an honor, and Brenda embodied that lesson throughout her life. Her love for her family ran deep, and she was always ready to lend a helping hand whenever someone was in need. Although she had no children of her own, she lovingly claimed five as her own, proudly naming each one whenever anyone asked. As children, she affectionately called them her "Little Boos," a nickname that eventually extended to her great-nieces and great-nephews.

Brenda could always be counted on during times of need. Whether accompanying children on school field trips, sitting beside a loved one in the hospital, or preparing extra food in case one of the children stopped by for a meal, she gave of herself freely and without hesitation. Her unwavering love, generosity, and quiet acts of service will forever be remembered.

Brenda was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Richard Blythe and William Blythe Jr.; her sister, Henrietta Thomas; and her nephews, Omar Blythe and Traeshonne Blythe.

She leaves to cherish her precious memory her brother, Edward Blythe; her sister, Camellia Blythe-Friday; her nieces, Tamboria Thomas, Nichole Fallatah, and Quincy Blythe; her nephew, Raymond Blythe; her beloved great-nieces and great-nephews; along with a host of cousins, extended family members, and dear friends who will miss her deeply.

Today, Brenda rests peacefully as she awaits the glorious day when the Lord shall sound His trumpet and His children will be gathered together. On that great getting-up morning, there will be no more pain, no more sorrow, and no more suffering—only everlasting peace, joy, and the presence of our Savior. We love you, Sis, and we thank God for the blessing of your life.
