Cal Payne was born on February 15, 1960, in Wilson, Arkansas, to the late Willie and Edith Payne. He was called home on April 19, 2026.
Cal attended school in Holland, Missouri, and later made his home in Carbondale in the mid-1990s, where he became a familiar and beloved presence in the community.
Cal had a heart of gold and was the kind of person who would give you the shirt off his back. He loved spending time with his family and friends, and to many, he was more than an uncle or relative—he was a father figure. Known for his great sense of humor, Cal kept everyone laughing and proudly held the title of the family clown.
He enjoyed the simple things in life, especially taking walks around town—often making sure his younger nieces and nephews joined him along the way. Affectionately known as “California Cal,” a nickname he gave himself even though he never lived in California, he was known and loved by many.
Cal also had a passion for working with his hands. He enjoyed landscaping, remodeling homes, detailing cars, dancing, and spending time with his loyal dog, Rusty.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Richard Woods, Eddie Payne, Ralph Payne, Earnest Payne, Willie Payne, and Mike Payne; and his sisters, Rosie Miller, Alberta Payne, and Almeeta Simmons.
He leaves to cherish his memory his sisters, Dollie Payne and Tommie (L.C.) Nelson, both of Carbondale, and Brenda (Jackie) Rowe of Hayti, Missouri; his special lady friend, Carolyn Alexander of Carbondale; along with a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and many dear friends who will miss and forever hold him in their hearts.
