Carol Mitchell, a beloved mother, daughter, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 18, 2026, in the comfort of her home in Carbondale, Illinois, at the age of 71.

Carol was born on August 4, 1955, in St. Louis, Missouri, to Ivory and Mary Alice Mitchell. She was raised in Centreville, Illinois, where she became well known and deeply loved by her family, friends, and members of the community.

Carol attended Garrison Elementary School and later Cahokia High School, graduating in 1974. In 1985, she continued her education, completing studies in pre-nursing, Certified Nursing Assistant training, and marketing.

Throughout her early years, Carol worked in nursing homes and hospitals, where her compassion and genuine love for people were evident in the care she provided to others. Later in life, she worked for Busch Stadium.

Carol was a woman who truly loved people. She had a kind and giving spirit and was known for the warmth, love, and compassion she shared with everyone around her. She enjoyed bringing people together, especially through her beloved barbecues. She also enjoyed playing bingo and spending precious time with family and friends.

Music brought Carol great joy throughout her life. She enjoyed many different genres and eras, with a special fondness for Carl Thomas, 1970s disco, and music from the early 2000s.

Carol gave her life to Jehovah in the early 1970s as one of Jehovah's Witnesses. Her faith was an important and meaningful part of her life and remained a cherished part of who she was.

Carol was a devoted mother to her four daughters: Rosalind Hamilton, Farrah Jones, Erica McGee, and Jacqueline McGee. She was deeply loved by her children. Rosalind and Jacqueline were especially blessed to care for their mother and remain by her side through the end of her life.

Carol also leaves to cherish her memory her four siblings: Everett Clemons, Jeannette Conners, Marvin Mitchell, and Sandra Rupert.

She leaves behind her beloved grandchildren: Quentin Sanders, Ronnie Drake, Kaylen McGee, Kaliyah Hamilton, Kavion Hamilton, Jamaya McGee, Rashe Townsend, and Yoshida Bearden, along with a host of great-grandchildren.

After spending much of her life in Centreville, Illinois, where she was loved by many and considered a beloved part of her hometown community, Carol moved to Carbondale approximately nine years ago. She made her home there and spent the remaining years of her life surrounded by the love, care, and support of her family.

Carol will be remembered for her kindness, her love for people, her faith, her warm spirit, her love of music, her barbecues, her laughter, and the countless lives she touched throughout her journey.

She leaves behind precious memories that will forever remain in the hearts of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her. Though her passing leaves a tremendous void, those who loved Carol can find comfort in knowing that she passed peacefully in the comfort of her home, surrounded by the love and care of her family.

Her memory will continue to live on through the people she loved, the lives she touched, and the many beautiful memories she created throughout her 71 years.
