Cathleen Mitts Leonard

Cathleen Mitts Leonard, 65, passed away peacefully in her sleep on September 23, 2025, in Carbondale, Illinois.

Born on February 10, 1960, in Moline, Illinois, Cathy grew up in East Moline and graduated from United Township High School. She began her higher education journey at Southern Illinois University, where she earned an Associate’s Degree in Applied Sciences. Her passion for learning and leadership then took her to Florida, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Management Information Systems, a Master’s in Administration, and a Master’s in Organizational Learning & Leadership—all from Barry University.

Cathy built an impressive career at Barry University, beginning as a Student Account Services Cashier and rising to become the Executive Director of Business Operations. She later served as the Assistant Chief Financial Officer at Barry University’s School of Law. Her dedication to education continued through her work as an Operations Administrator for several charter schools. Even after retiring, Cathy returned to Southern Illinois University to work in the Residential Life Department.

Cathy loved to travel and cherished spending time with her family and friends. She especially enjoyed taking her grandchildren and great-grandchildren on magical trips to Disney World, creating memories that will be treasured forever.

She was married to Joseph E. Leonard for 37 years.

Cathy is survived by her husband, Joe Leonard; her stepdaughter, Cassandra (Paul) Gordon; her beloved grandchildren Mason, Makayla, Hunter, and Hailey (Ralph) Ippolito; great-granddaughter Aria; and her sister, Linda Mitts. She was preceded in death by her parents, Anne E. (Raske) Mitts and George E. Mitts; her brother, George E. Mitts Jr.; and her great-grandson, Dominic.

Cathy’s warmth, dedication, and adventurous spirit touched the lives of many. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
