A Life of Service and Labor
Clarence was a proud veteran, having retired after serving his country for over 24 years in the U.S. Army and the Illinois Army National Guard, achieving the rank of Sergeant First Class. His commitment to service was matched by his tireless work ethic in his professional life.
For 60 years, Clarence was a fixture on the road and in the shop. He worked as a truck driver, hauling across the country and locally for many area farmers. A master mechanic for six decades, he possessed a rare gift for understanding how things worked. Whether it was a diesel engine or a household appliance, Clarence was a true "jack of all trades" who could fix or build just about anything. He eventually retired from Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC), where he worked in the janitorial department.
Family and Legacy
Clarence shared nearly 30 beautiful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Sandra (Taylor) Sherman. Together, they built a large, vibrant family tree that was his greatest source of pride.
He is survived by his children and their families:
Clarence also leaves behind his loyal dog and best friend, Levi, as well as numerous brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, William and Charlie; his sister, Connie; two children, Michael and Michelle; and his granddaughter, Elisa.
Hobbies and Community
When he wasn't under the hood of a truck or spending time with his grandchildren, Clarence could be found indulging in his favorite pastimes. He was an avid fisherman and a talented woodworker who loved working with his hands. He was also a dedicated member of the American Legion Post 127, where he found camaraderie with his fellow veterans.
Clarence’s legacy is one of grit, craftsmanship, and an unwavering love for his family. He taught those around him that if something was broken, it was worth fixing, and if a job was worth doing, it was worth doing right.
