Cynthia Jo Johnson, known lovingly as Cindy to her friends and family, was born in Carbondale, Illinois, on January 4, 1955. She passed away peacefully in Cobden, Illinois, on September 25, 2026, leaving behind a life filled with family, love, quiet strength, and cherished memories.
Cindy was a devoted daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She is survived by her brothers, Tim Brumley, Steve Brumley, and Mike Brumley; her daughters, Candace and Cassie; her grandchildren, Alyssa, Nolena, Magnolia, Caitlyn, Hyacinth, Amaryllis, Phillip, and Michael II; and her great-grandchildren, Rhanerya, Rhanezmae, August, and Palmer.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Josephine Brumley and John Westley Brumley, and her siblings, Danny Brumley and Ron Brumley.
Throughout her working life, Cindy served her community in a variety of ways. She worked at Carbondale City Hall and at Southern Illinois University Carbondale before beginning a career in childcare. She found meaning in caring for others, and her nurturing nature was a reflection of the kind of person she was throughout her life.
After the death of her father in 2004, Cindy devoted herself to caring for her mother, remaining by her side and helping her until her mother's passing in 2014. This chapter of her life was a testament to Cindy's loyalty, compassion, and deep love for her family. She gave her time and herself freely to those she loved.
In the years that followed, Cindy settled quietly in Cobden. She found happiness in the simple and meaningful moments of life, especially spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her family brought her great joy, and the memories they made together will remain a lasting part of her legacy.
Cindy also had a deep appreciation for the outdoors. She loved hiking, painting, and taking part in the many activities that allowed her to enjoy nature and the world around her. These interests reflected her curiosity, creativity, and appreciation for life's quieter moments.
Cindy's life was not defined by grand gestures, but by the countless small acts of love and care she gave to the people around her. She was there for her family when they needed her. She cared for those she loved, created memories with her children and grandchildren, and found joy in the beauty of the outdoors and in the company of her family.
Though she is no longer with us, Cindy's presence will continue through the family she loved so deeply, through the memories shared around tables and on quiet days together, and through the generations that carry her love forward.
She will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever a part of the family she cherished.
May she rest peacefully.
