Makanda

David James Brady, known to all who loved him as “Bing,” or “Bingo,” passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, laughter, and love. A longtime resident of Makanda. Known by many as the “Unofficial Mayor of Makanda.”

David was cherished by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. Like most good nicknames, there are multiple origin stories. His longtime friends are keepers of the secret, but to all others, "Bing" was more than a nickname — it was a characterization of something wonderful, ultimately taking on the form of "Papa Bing" to the children in his life, embodying warmth and compassion in all forms.

Dave was born and raised in Elmhurst Illinois, and despite having spent decades away from the city, never quite lost his Chicagoland accent or his mischievous ways. Always known for being a merry prankster - Friends recall one of his favorite stories to tell - during his time in Catholic school when a bout of snow fell during the week. Wanting a day off from school, young Dave posted himself at the sidewalk in front of school and told everyone to go home, that Mother Superior said it was a snow day. When in fact - she did not - make that proclamation, and was none-too-happy when dozens of students never showed that day.

David eventually came to Southern Illinois to attend SIU-Carbondale. At SIU he received his degree in Education. It is from here where he began a lifelong journey that touched countless lives. He had a heart especially attuned to individuals with special needs, and a particular passion for helping children with special needs.

Never one to seek fame, fortune, or frivolous materialism, he sought a simple life on the hillside of Makanda, rarely meeting a stranger and finding ways to stay relaxed and focused on the better parts of life — a lesson so many of us would be blessed to emulate.

David was proceed in death by his father - Thomas Brady. His Mother Nancy Brady and his sisters Karen and Anne. His beloved dog Sadie.

David is survived by his beloved family: Katrinka Rynder (Ted), Wesley Adams (Misty), and his grandchildren MaKaylynn Sheldon, Shiloh Wright, Whitney Adams, and Austin Adams, as well as his great-grandchildren Quincy, Asher, Alexander, Sophia, and Stella. He also leaves his loving partner and best friend, Jennifer Boyd, and his special “grandchildren” Ellie and Michael.

Known for his warm spirit and deep love for history and the outdoors, he shared his zest for life with everyone around him. He never met a dog he did not love.

David’s joy, laughter, generosity, and unwavering kindness will be deeply missed, but his memory will live on “ Up on the Hill of Makanda” and in the hearts of all who knew him.

Ministry of Comfort was Lovingly Entrusted to Southern Cremation and Burial Services of Murphysboro, Illinois.
