Derrick Underwood, also known as DJ Baheemith, departed this life on June 3, 2024, at the age of 35. Born on February 14, 1989, in Carbondale, Illinois, to Valerie Mosley and Derrick Underwood Sr., Derrick grew up with a love for anime and video games. It was from one such game, Final Fantasy, that he derived his DJ name, a moniker that would come to define his musical journey.
As a preteen, Derrick moved to California, where he later graduated from Berkeley High School in 2008. During his time there, his love for music flourished, leading him to perform in Grease: The Musical and other theatrical productions. After high school, Derrick took classes at Berkeley City College, but it was his time at Youth Radio that truly set him on his path as a DJ.
Known as DJ Baheemith, Derrick used his music to touch countless lives, bringing people together with his electrifying performances. Beyond his artistry, he was known for his humor, kindness, and the unique energy that made him a light in the lives of many. He was a pillar of strength to those around him—a devoted son, a protective younger brother, and a loving uncle. Derrick took great pride in caring for his mother, nieces, and nephews. Despite being the youngest sibling, he embraced the responsibility of supporting his family.
Derrick’s dedication extended beyond his home; he worked tirelessly, including as a teacher at Oakland Freedom School, where he inspired young men in his community. Most recently, he worked security at San Francisco International Airport while continuing to explore his passion for music. In 2023, he contributed to various podcasts, but his most enduring legacy will be the many unforgettable events he helped produce as a DJ. Through his music, he created spaces where people could connect, celebrate, and heal.
Derrick also had a passion for photography, capturing the beauty of life during road trips with family and friends. His adventurous spirit and artistic soul will be deeply missed but forever remembered.
Derrick leaves behind a loving family to cherish his memory: his parents, Valerie and Derrick Sr.; his maternal grandmother, Mildred Mosley; and his sisters, Sefra and Ewa Shabakareed. He is also survived by his beloved nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and a vast community of friends. He was preceded in death by his older sister, Iyahmena Seaton.
Derrick was a bright spark in this world—one whose light will never fade. His legacy of music, love, and laughter will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
