Dr. James A. "Jim" Chapin, 84, passed away peacefully on June 15, 2024, three months after his wife of 55 years, Minnie, passed.
He was born on March 16, 1940, in Warren, Ohio, to Richard and Francis Chapin. He had one brother, Gene, who preceded him in death. Growing up Jim’s father worked for the railroad which led to James’ family eventually moving out to California. This is where he would meet his wife Minnie and her two daughters, Sharon and Deborah.
Jim pursued a PhD in psychology from Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Jim, Minnie, and their family would create a life in Illinois and always speak fondly of their time at Evergreen Terrace. Jim was always a proud Saluki. After graduation, James used his PhD as a psychologist for the State of California. He was also a disaster relief volunteer for the Red Cross for over thirty years. He was very enthusiastic about helping people in all walks of life find the support they needed.
He was passionate about WWII history, planes, and travel. One of his favorite activities was going to airshows to see, and sometimes even fly in, historical planes. He loved visiting Sharon’s family in Okinawa, Japan because of the military history there. Minnie and Jim would often road trip through America. He loved stopping at local historical sites and learning about the different cultures throughout the US. They would often take their grandkids along on their adventures.
Jim was a quiet, hardworking, logic-driven man, but this did not hinder him from showing his fun, playful side, especially around his grandchildren. He always showed great love and support for those around him.
He is survived by his two daughters, six grandkids, two great grandkids, and many loving nieces and nephews.
Professional services were entrusted to Southern Cremation and Burial Services of Murphysboro, Illinois.
