Life Reflections for Edward Lee “Poppa” Harris August 14, 1957 – July 12, 2025
With heavy hearts and profound love, we remember Edward Lee “Poppa” Harris, a devoted father, beloved brother, cherished uncle, faithful church member, and friend to many. Edward was born on August 14, 1957, in Cairo, Illinois, to the late Leonard Harris Sr. and Marilyn Joyce Harris. He was a proud graduate of Cairo High School, Class of 1975.
After high school, Edward ventured to the Chicagoland area, settling in Woodridge, Illinois, where he worked at Solar Press Factory for nearly a decade. His journey later took him to El Paso, Texas, before returning home to Cairo in 2009—a place that always had his heart.
Edward was baptized at a young age and, in 2017, reaffirmed his faith by becoming a dedicated member of the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Cairo. His commitment to his church was unwavering. He lovingly painted the entire courtyard and two parish halls and assisted in setting up various church functions, including karate sessions. Edward offered his time and talents freely, never asking for anything in return, even a thank you—and certainly never complaining about being tired. His quiet dedication spoke volumes.
Known affectionately as “Poppa,” Edward was a man of warmth, wisdom, and humor. His quick wit, endearing stutter, and zest for life made him unforgettable. He never missed a moment to spend time with his children, grandchildren, and extended family. Poppa's deep love for painting, especially with that corner bush he had mastered, was evident in everything he touched. He was a perfectionist when it came to his craft, sharing it generously with friends, family, and his church without hesitation.
Throughout his life, Edward was married to Matilda Phelan and later Kim Hawkins. He also shared a lasting partnership with Cleatus “Sister” James of Cairo, IL, who survives him. His legacy lives on through his four beloved children:
Edward’s love continues through his many grandchildren: Yoseanda Kimbrough, Marilyn Hawkins, Allen Cruthird, Malik Wilson, Anaya Hawkins, Lorenzo Redmond, Jayla Johnson-Springs, Jason Springs, Idara Etukudo, Zaria Olugosi, Izaiah Olugosi, Janiya Lawler, Cassidy Johnson, Paris Johnson, Justin Johnson Jr., and Blake Johnson.
Poppa was deeply loved by his church family, a wide circle of friends, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins who will miss him dearly—especially his devoted nieces: Rhonda “Baby” Rayford of Marion, IL, Stephanie Johnson of Burnham, IL, and Montinia Harris of Cairo, IL.
He is also survived by his seven siblings who will continue to cherish his memory:
Edward “Poppa” Harris’s presence was a gift to all who knew him. His legacy of faith, service, laughter, and unconditional love will continue to live on in the hearts of those he touched. He was truly one of a kind, and his absence leaves a space that cannot be filled. This is not goodbye—it’s “see you later.”
