Evelyn Ross

July 1, 1929 — August 5, 2025

Crete

Evelyn Ross was born on July 1, 1929, in Chicago, Illinois, to the late Robert and Evalina Johnson, who preceded her in death. Evelyn attended Dumbar High School in Chicago, Illinois. She confessed Christ at an early age and was baptized by her uncle, Reverend Mack Rossie Lemons, who also preceded her in death.

On December 22, 1952, Evelyn Ross married Arthur Ross, who passed away before her. Their union was blessed with six children, including Arthur Eugene Ross, who also preceded her in death.

Evelyn was grounded in her faith and family. She worked in various roles over the years and found the greatest joy serving the Lord when her health permitted her to do so. Evelyn was well known for her exceptional tea cakes and German chocolate cakes, and she always carried herself with grace and style.

In April 2006, Evelyn Ross joined the New Galilee Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of her son, Reverend Michael Ross.

In her later years, she enjoyed watching her favorite television programs with Kelly Brinkman, her caretaker—General Hospital, Tamron Hall, and Steve Harvey. Her favorite gospel song was “Talk it Over with Jesus.”

Evelyn remained fearless and full of faith until the very end. She was often known by her given nickname, “Sassy.”

On August 5, 2025, Evelyn Ross transitioned peacefully to her Eternal Home.

Evelyn leaves to cherish her memory and continue her legacy: her beloved children, Arnold (Marilynn) Ross Sr., Dr. Larry Ross Sr., Felicia (Al) Sumrall, Michael (Karen) Ross, and Rosalind (Ronald Sr.) Scott; seventeen grandchildren, including Alana Ross and Mario Ross, who preceded her in death; nineteen great-grandchildren; sisters, Velma Brown, Gwen (James) Grey, and Barbara Brown; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents and siblings—Annie Lue Williams, John Johnson, and Helen Ball.

A special thank you goes out to Kelly Brinkman and Diane Becton, who took care of Evelyn until she took her flight home.
