Gary Lynn Bergunder, of Murphysboro, Illinois, passed away on November 1, 2024, at the age of 73. Born on March 18, 1951, on Chicago’s south side, Gary grew up in a welcoming family that embraced friends of all ages and backgrounds. Known for his ability to bring people together, he was often called “the negotiator,” skillfully helping resolve conflicts even in the turbulent 1960s.
Gary served honorably as a helicopter maintenance officer in the 101st Airborne Division of the U.S. Army, participating in the final pullout of the Vietnam War. His strong work ethic was evident from an early age, as he joined his father in maintenance work at 12 and later worked in the neighborhood bodega. He also inherited his mother’s artistic talents, watching her paint murals for local businesses, a creativity he carried into his own life.
Throughout his career, Gary partnered with his late wife, working in painting, carpentry, tilework, and remodeling across Texas, New Mexico, and Chicago. Together, they raised two sons, who remember him as a patient, wise teacher who imparted life skills and values. Following the passing of his wife, Gary moved to southern Illinois in 2008, where he immersed himself in community projects, particularly at Christ Community Church. He cherished the mentorship of Rev. John Nordstrom and the camaraderie of Pastor Debi, who often inspired his skilled craftsmanship within the church walls.
In 2014, Gary met Marilyn Glasford when she joined him on a church project. They quickly became close friends and business partners, sharing a deep and meaningful companionship that endured for 11 years. Their relationship was marked by mutual support, joy, and creativity in both life and work.
Gary was a man of resilience and humor, facing his health challenges with determination. Known for his playful pranks and lively storytelling, he was a friend to all who loved sharing in others’ stories as much as his own. He encouraged everyone around him and left a legacy of kindness, laughter, and generosity.
He is survived by his significant other, Marilyn Glasford; two sons; and a circle of family and friends who will miss him dearly. Gary’s life was one of dedication, creativity, and love, and he will be remembered with warmth and gratitude by all who knew him.
Final arrangements were lovingly entrusted to Southern Cremation and Burial Services of Murphysboro, Illinois.
