Joe S. Buchanan, age 72, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, October 26, 2025, in Marion, Illinois. He was born on July 1, 1953, in Leland, Mississippi, to George Buchanan and Lucille (Valliant) Buchanan.
Joe was a proud father and grandfather who loved his grandchildren dearly. In his earlier years, he worked in construction and was a dedicated member of the Masonic Lodge. After retiring, he continued to serve his community as a beloved school bus driver for the Illinois Central School Bus Company, where he touched the lives of countless students with kindness, love, and care.
He was previously united in marriage to his first wife, Sheila Buchanan and though their paths later separated, they shared meaningful years together.
Joe rededicated his life to Christ…. a transformation that became a true testimony of God’s grace. He faithfully served as a deacon at
Paul Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, where he renewed his walk with the Lord. His life became a shining example of redemption and faith, and he found peace and joy in serving God.
Outside of his devotion to Christ, Joe enjoyed football, baseball , And spending time with family, and bringing smiles to those around him. He was known for giving everyone he knew a special nickname and had a gift for making others laugh.
Joe leaves to cherish his memory his Children: Charkell Buchanan, Markeeta Buchanan, Joe Buchanan, Antonio Buchanan, Myles Buchanan, and Mason (Amanda) Buchanan; Grandchildren: Nathaniel Perry, Na’Maya Perry, Michael “Duke” Gunn Jr., Penelope “Pen Pen” Buchanan, Josiah “Old Man” Davis; Great grandchildren: Adalynn Ward, Waverly Perry, Hailee Perry, Azariyah Ivy; Sisters: Mary Chevalier and Georgia Berry; and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family who loved him dearly.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Lucille Buchanan; grandmother, Annie Lou Valliant; sister, Earlie Jones; nephews, Rev. Patrick Buchanan and Lavelle Simon; niece, Ebony Simon; and grandson, Da’Micah Jaseer Gunn. And his special friend Margaret Walls.
Although Joe’s earthly journey has ended, his love, laughter, and memories will live on forever in the hearts of those who loved and knew him.
