John Michael Padget, 77, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. He was born on March 15, 1949, in Mt. Vernon, Illinois, to Ralph and Bonita Padget.
John was a man of strong conviction, dedication, and perseverance. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy for three years aboard the USS Dewey. After overcoming addiction, John earned his Master’s Degree in Psychology and devoted his life to helping others as a substance abuse counselor, offering guidance, compassion, and hope to many throughout his career.
John married Barbara Jo Wills in 1970, and she preceded him in death. Three children were born to this union. He later married Harriet Leinenbach on August 1, 1983, and together they shared 42 loving years of marriage.
In his spare time, John loved the outdoors. He especially enjoyed visiting the Smoky Mountains and canoeing on the Current River. More than anything, he cherished time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; along with Timothy James Padget; and his best friend, William “Bill” Martin.
John is survived by his loving wife, Harriet Padget; his sons, John Michael McNear (Shelby) and Michael Lee Padget; his daughter, Deanna Pebbles (James); his brothers, Steve Padget (Donna) and David Padget (Rhonda); his sisters, Ann Padget and Susan Beavis (Scott); his grandchildren, Desiree McNear (David), Jordan McNear (Mike), Forrest McNear (Kyra), Michaela Copple (Ethan), and Joseph Gipson (Karla); three bonus grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; close family members Guy Gipson and Gary Hamilton; along with many other family members and friends, all of whom will cherish his memory.
Ministry of comfort was lovingly entrusted to Southern Cremation and Burial Services of Murphysboro, Illinois.
