Obituary

Kenneth J. Stephenson passed away on Thursday, May 7, 2026, at the Marion VA Medical Center in Marion, Illinois.

Ken was born in Creve Coeur, Missouri, to a young couple who, wanting a better life for their children, lovingly placed him and his biological sister, Cheri, for adoption. At the ages of five and four, Ken and Cheri were welcomed into the Wayne and Flo Stephenson family, where they were raised with love and given a wonderful life.

At the age of 17, Ken joined the United States Army. He proudly served from October 1979 until October 1982 and continued his service in the Army Reserve until 1985. During his military years, he traveled to many foreign countries, with Korea holding a special place among his memories. Ken was deeply proud of his military service and carried that pride throughout his life.

Over the years, Ken worked many different jobs, but one of his greatest accomplishments was his commitment to continuing his education and expanding his knowledge. He was known by family and friends as the “go-to guy” for answers to almost anything.

Ken enjoyed many hobbies and interests. He was an avid fisherman, talented photographer, motorcycle enthusiast, and skilled fly maker for fishing. He also loved reading and researching a wide range of subjects.

In 1993, Ken married Teresa Falor, and together they had one daughter, Tommie Renae, whom he cherished deeply. Though the marriage later ended in divorce, Ken remained a devoted father. In 2012, he married Sandy Anderson McCann, and they shared their lives together until his passing.

Ken is survived by his loving wife, Sandy Stephenson; his precious daughter, Tommie Renae of San Diego, California; his stepdaughter, Cassie (Freddie) Carter; his stepsons, Andrew (April) McCann and Wesley McCann; and five beloved step-grandchildren, Cody Carter, Gracie McCann, Marti Jayne McCann, Anderson McCann, and Jamison McCann, all of Murphysboro, Illinois. He is also survived by his close friend, Collin Bradham; and his sisters, Lida Lou Larsen (Ron), Pat Schwinn (Gregg), Dale Marie Weir (Mike), and Nissa Page Stephenson (Mark Wilson).

Ken was preceded in death by both his adoptive and biological parents, as well as his sister, Cheri Kamuf.

Honoring Ken’s wishes, cremation rites will be accorded. Half of his cremated remains will be taken to San Diego, California, where he and his sister Cheri will receive an ocean burial. The remaining cremains will be laid to rest with his wife Sandy upon her passing.

A memorial service for family and friends will be held at a later date.

Ministry of Comfort lovingly entrusted to Southern Cremation and Burial Services of Murphysboro, Illinois.
