Carbondale

Marlene K. Meier, 74, of Carbondale, Illinois, passed away on April 7, 2025, at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

Marlene Kay Spitzer was born on October 10, 1950, in Kensal, North Dakota, to Lester and Delores (Kramer) Spitzer. She graduated from Kensal High School in 1968 and went on to attend college before beginning her professional career in St. Paul, Minnesota. She later relocated to Carbondale, Illinois, where she made her home and community.

On October 28, 1989, Marlene married Robin Meier, with whom she shared 35 years of marriage. Through their union, she lovingly welcomed a stepdaughter and stepson into her life.

Marlene worked for many years in the billing department at Memorial Hospital in Carbondale, where she was known for her diligence and kindness. She retired in 2015.

A woman of many interests, Marlene found joy in cooking, crafting, and watching television—particularly QVC. Her thoughtfulness was one of her defining traits; family members often received surprise packages in the mail, sent just because she saw something she thought they’d enjoy or need.

Marlene is survived by her husband, Robin; her stepdaughter and stepson; a step-granddaughter; her brother, Quentin (Lynn) Spitzer of Kensal, North Dakota; her sister, Lorie (Dan) Ruff of Bismarck, North Dakota; five nieces, one nephew, and numerous great- and great-great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her mother- and father-in-law; her brother, Reed; her nephew, Brandon; and her brother-in-law, Steve.

Inurnment will take place at a later date in Kensal, North Dakota.

Final Arrangements were Lovingly Entrusted to Southern Cremation and Burial Services of Murphysboro, Illinois.
