Melvin L. Nesbitt

Melvin L. Nesbitt, 65, of Carbondale, IL departed this earthly realm for his eternal resting place on August 3, 2022 at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, Illinois.

Melvin was born September 11, 1956 in Carbondale, Illinois to Ruben and Virginia Nesbitt (Reed). He received his education within the Carbondale school system, graduating from Carbondale Community High School in 1974. He was a standout star athlete, excelling in many sports like basketball, football and track & field.

Melvin was a man of many hats. Rather it was car repairs, remodeling homes or inspiring us with his “words of wisdom”, Melvin was the jack of all trades. One of his favorite past times was fishing with his grandchildren and friends.

While Melvin was a student at CCHS, he began a romantic partnership with Loretta Mathis that lasted for 16 years. Unto this relationship, Melvin birthed his daughter, Tenelya Nesbitt and gained a bonus daughter, Trakinda Mathis. Melvin married Carolyn Nesbitt in 2000 and within their union, gained six stepsons; Antonio, Destion, Quincy, Lamont, Renard and Jermaine (deceased).

Melvin leaves to cherish his children, his grandchildren; Michael Greene, Jr., Tenell Greene, Mikaden Greene, JaQuonn Mathis, Ashayla Mathis, Katerra Mathis and additional grandchildren Mone’y and Michaeleon Greene, great grandchildren; Kayden Greene and Amare & Jaedon Burnett; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and many friends with significant relationships.

He is preceded in death by his father, mother, both paternal and maternal grandparents, siblings; Doris Faye Sanders, Ruben Nesbitt, Dennis Nesbitt; and his great granddaughter, Aubree Burnett.

A special thanks to all of those who assisted in Melvin’s end of life care, especially his cousin, Trina Neal-Smith, who was by his side during the last moments of his life.
