Michael "Mike" Sztym, 58, of Murphysboro, Illinois, passed away on September 20, 2026. Born in Chicago to the late Michael and Magdalene Sztym, Mike was a beloved husband, father, and friend whose life was defined by a profound sense of honor and service.

Enlisting in the U.S. Army at just 18 years old, Mike served his country proudly for 14 years. He valued his military service above all else, a commitment that seamlessly trickled down into his daily life, his unwavering work ethic, and the deep respect with which he treated everyone he met. Though he carried the weight of a difficult life and knew pain intimately, Mike chose to transform his hardships into boundless love and kindness. He carried his burdens quietly, offering the world only his warmth and welcoming energy.

To so many who crossed his path, Mike was a steadfast father figure. People naturally gravitated toward his steady presence, knowing they could always rely on him for a listening ear and invaluable life advice.

Beyond his sense of duty and his role as a protector, Mike possessed a rich, creative spirit. He was an avid reader and writer, and he loved exploring his imagination and storytelling through playing Dungeons & Dragons. A true craftsman and enthusiast, he also enjoyed making knives and collecting replica BB guns—hobbies that perfectly reflected his unique blend of artistry, tactical appreciation, and quiet focus.

Above all, his greatest devotion was to his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Kira, whom he loved immeasurably and unequivocally, always treating her with the utmost respect and adoration. He was a deeply dedicated and protective father to his stepsons, Logan and Luke. He was preceded in death by his parents, Michael and Magdalene.

Mike’s quiet strength, his steadfast loyalty, and the pure, resilient love he gave to his family will be profoundly missed, but never forgotten, by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
