Milton A. Burns

August 27, 1930 — April 23, 2025

Mt. Vernon

Milton August Burns, 94, of Mt. Vernon, passed away peacefully at his home with his daughter, Amber, by his side.

Born on August 27, 1930, to the late Arthur and Gertie (Taylor) Burns, Milton was a gentle and empathetic man whose life was rich with adventure and wisdom gathered over his 94 years. He was a wealth of knowledge and a gifted storyteller, especially when recalling his time serving in the U.S. Army as a medic—stories he shared with pride and a twinkle in his eye.

Milton held many occupations throughout his life, but his final and most cherished position was at Fujicolor Processing, where he found joy in his work and lasting friendships among his coworkers.

On November 16, 1990, he married Jeane Burns, his beloved partner. When Jeane was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, Milton made it his sacred duty to care for her at home, showing unwavering devotion until her passing on January 12, 2025.

Compassion and wisdom defined Milton's life. His home was a haven—a safe space for anyone in need. He offered shelter to those without a home, cooked endless meals for loved ones, and fed every stray animal that wandered into his yard. He loved without judgment and gently reminded those around him that "nothing is promised to us, so always be kind."

He found joy in simple pleasures: horses, Sunday drives, the music of Sam Cooke, and Oreo Blizzards. Even on his hardest days, he had a gift for making people smile.

Milton is survived by his children: Amber (Burns) Heaton and her husband Josh of Bonnie, IL; Matthew Bay of Mt. Vernon, IL; Lora Batson of Mt. Vernon, IL; Tim Burns and his wife Angie of Thompsonville, IL; and Shelby Skidmore and her husband Jeff of Mt. Vernon, IL. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Courtney (Burns) Bullard, Caleb Burns, Bethanie (Burns) Heinrich, Tanner Burns, Jacob Skidmore, Jason Skidmore, Adrienne Lyday, Stephanie Davis, and Jeremy Batson; 17 great-grandchildren; his special friend and caregiver Jennifer (Jupiter) Cates; and his loyal canine companion, Albert.

The family extends special gratitude to Residential Hospice—with heartfelt thanks to Tammy and Holly—for their compassionate care, allowing Milton to remain at home and, true to form, still “running the show.”

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jeane; his son, Patrick Arthur Burns; and his faithful canine companions, Bubbie, Gracie, and Millie.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

"Throughout life, there will be givers and there will be takers. Always be a giver."

Ministry of Comfort Entrusted to Southern Cremation and Burial Services of Murphysboro, Illinois.
