Robert S. Purcell

Robert S. Purcell, 78, of Ava, Illinois, passed away on June 3, 2025. He was the beloved son of Rev. Louis and Zelda Purcell.

Robert graduated from Murphysboro Township High School in 1965 and attended McKendree College. A proud veteran of the U.S. Air Force, he served in Thailand during the Vietnam conflict.

Robert was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church of Murphysboro and a devoted follower of Jesus Christ. His career included many years as a plumber and foreman at Southern Illinois University, and he was a dedicated member of the Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 160. After retirement, he continued to work for 25 years at Kokopelli Golf Club, a place that reflected his passion for golf.

Robert found joy in life’s simple pleasures — cheering on Murphysboro sports and college basketball, hunting, enjoying peanut butter and popcorn, and playing Flinch with his family. He had a special place in his heart for his dog, Banjo Boy.

He married Tonia Edgar on April 24, 2009, and together they shared a life full of love and laughter.

Robert is survived by his wife, Tonia, and children Julia Purcell (Mike O’Neill), Jennifer Harris (Barclay), Robert Purcell (Amanda Urban), Amie Bollmann (Duane Taguacta), and Alisa Knowles. He was a proud grandfather to Julian (Adi) Garcia, Jarred Robert (Sarah) Garcia, Jeramey (Erin) Garcia, Jacob and Tyler Harris, Christopher (Marisa) Purcell, Shelby Ouelette, Kaley Purcell, Aidin Taguacta, Ava and Austin Knowles. He was a great-grandfather to Liam Garcia, and Alton Purcell. He is also survived by his siblings Tom Purcell and Linda Lehman.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Don Purcell, and sister Jan Nettles.
