William John Atkinson

William John Atkinson, 75, of Carterville passed away on August 1, 2026. He was born on May 20, 1951, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, to Percy and Edith (Guiry) Atkinson.

William eventually made his way to Southern Illinois, where he attended Southern Illinois University Carbondale. He built a life that reflected his thoughtful and compassionate nature, working as a business and health writer and sharing his knowledge and perspective through his writing.

William especially enjoyed walking at night, finding peace and a sense of connection while surrounded by nature. He was also a generous man who supported many charitable organizations throughout his life. Above all, William was a proud and devoted father who cherished his children and the time they shared together.

William will be lovingly remembered by his daughter, Krista Atkinson; his son, John Atkinson; his younger brother, Rob Atkinson; and his beloved cat, Junior, who was a cherished companion.

William leaves behind a legacy of love for his family, and an appreciation for the simple beauty found in the world around him. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Ministry of Comfort has been lovingly entrusted to Southern Cremation and Burial Services of Murphysboro, Illinois.
